Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) – What is it?

Guest Blog by Becky Barns

Now you know me, no subject is off-limits, no topic too embarrassing. And Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is one I know a lot of you out there will have experienced.

Do you remember when you were younger and you didn’t have to dash to the loo after sneezing? When you laughed freely without peeing yourself? Fun times huh?

And those of us who are mums will know all too well the fear of the trampoline. Not only do we have to strap our boobs down, but we have to think about our bladders too.

It’s not just you…

1 in 3 women experience Urinary incontinence, millions of women across the world experience symptoms from light leakage to having to wear pads all day in case of ‘accidents'.

What is Urinary Incontinence?

It can be known as bladder leakage. Urinary incontinence is when you accidentally pass wee. For some, it can be frequent, for others, more occasionally. It varies from a few dribbles to a complete loss of bladder control.

Urinary Incontinence is caused by weakness of the urethral sphincter, lack of urethral support, and weak pelvic floor muscles. Something that can come with age or factors like childbirth.

Urinary Incontinence – What signs should I look for?

There are a couple of signs to look out for that might indicate you need a bit of extra help.

  • waking up in the night to use the loo
  • needing to rush home when out and about
  • leaking a tiny bit of wee when you laugh, cough, or do exercise

Contrelle to the rescue!

Whatever the cause bladder leaks can have a huge impact on your confidence and quality of life; from sexy times and work to daily activities and most importantly (to me haha) the clothes you can wear.

If this sounds familiar and you are one of the many folk who are tired of wearing uncomfortable bulky pads and liners I am here to introduce you to Contrelle.

What is Contrelle?

Contrelle is a medical device for treating women experiencing SUI.

Contrelle Activgard

It’s a soft foam device, similar to a tampon that can be inserted into the vagina to support the urethra to help prevent SUI. It of course doesn’t stop you weeing normally, and you don’t have to remove it to go to the loo either.

It can be worn up to 16 hours per day, although you may find you only need it for specific activities like exercising.

For more in-depth answers and explanations, you can visit the Contrelle FAQ section or have a browse of the website to get a better understanding of the product.
